The UK’s first British-Asian Prime Minister is a historic moment and a significant step forward for diversity in the UK today.
Rishi Sunak has promised “integrity, professionalism and accountability” as Prime Minister, and while he may have enjoyed privileges that most people and communities across the UK do not have access to, we hope in his new position Mr. Sunak and his office will influence policies that address deep-seated inequalities.
This day would have been unimaginable even just a short time ago, but with the first British-Asian Prime Minister now holding the highest office in public life and on the first day of Diwali, children and young people can grow up knowing that these opportunities are within their reach.
There is still much to be done to tackle inequality and building a meritocracy across the UK, however all of us – those who share the PM’s politics and those who do not – can recognise this important step forward for diversity in public life.
