At Diversity Mark’s recent Industry Peer Event on Neurodiversity at Work, we learned that it is an umbrella term for a range of different conditions, from ADHD to dyslexia, reflecting the differences seen in the functioning of the human brain. The event was hosted at PwC’s office in Belfast.
We don’t all work in the same way, and conditions are often very individual to each person. You could be working with someone who has a neurodiverse condition, which is why designing for accessibility in the workplace is beneficial for everyone.
It’s important to note that the best information you can get to support neurodiversity in your workplace comes from the individuals themselves. Get to know your team, who are the true experts through their lived experiences. If we allow people to be themselves, challenges can be supported, and strengths can be used to achieve incredible outcomes for personal and professional growth.
The session was very impactful with key takeaways noted below:
• Neurodiversity hosts a range of conditions such as ADHD/AD, Dyslexia, Development Language Disorder or Dyscalculia reflecting the differences seen in the functioning of the human brain.
• Neurodiversity is not as visible as physical disability and people with neurodiverse conditions often hide it.
• It is important to train the Senior Management in managing employees with neurodiverse conditions.
• In today’s workplace, employees give higher importance to diversity benefits than just a high salary.
• It is not illegal or unfair to offer reasonable adjustment to a disabled employee.
• It is important to engage with your employees because the best information you can get to support neurodiversity in your workplace comes from the individuals themselves.
