NIE Networks have been awarded the Silver Diversity Charter Mark in recognition of their journey to increasing equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The company has set targets to increase disability and ethnic diversity across the organisation. These include the creation of a diversity and inclusion forum, unconscious bias training for all employees, bespoke training for line managers, a buddy system and the development of policies to ensure an inclusive environment for all.
Paula Leathem, Head of Human Resources, NIE Networks commented:
“We are delighted to have achieved the next milestone in our journey towards a truly diverse and inclusive workforce. I look forward to working with colleagues to implement these targets and develop our workplace culture further and I’d like to thank Diversity Mark for their frameworks to help guide us in our efforts.”
The company recently announced that it plans to create 1000 additional jobs over the next ten years, including 400 apprenticeship roles.
Paula explained how the Diversity Mark is a key part of their recruitment strategy:
“We know that there are people out there who have the skills, expertise and enthusiasm we’re looking for but, for whatever reason, may not have applied to date. “Our aim is to continue evolving and implementing innovative methods that nurture an inclusive culture in order to help us attract and retain the very best of talent. We’re excited about how that will benefit the company and strengthen our ability to innovate and transform the electricity network so that Northern Ireland can benefit from a renewable and more prosperous future.”
The company had previously been awarded the Bronze Charter Mark for their efforts and targets to increase gender diversity.
Emma Lyttle, Head of Engagement at Diversity Mark, said:
“We are delighted for NIE Networks on achieving the robust Silver Diversity Mark Accreditation. Our Independent Assessment Panel congratulated the successes in addressing gender diversity and commitment to a wider diversity agenda. We’d like to extend our congratulations to all of the team for their ongoing initiatives.”
The Diversity and Inclusion Forum will involve representation from experts in the field including Disability NI and Business in the Community in order to ensure the company is adopting best practice in its approach.
NIE Networks are currently recruiting a number of roles including business analysts, engineers and student placements. Further information can be found at nienetworks.co.uk and anyone interested in learning how they can make their organisation disability friendly can visit disabilityaction.org.
